Cherry blossom/ Rice/ Rice balls (Onigiri)

Cherry blossom rice balls (Sakura Onigiri)

These cherry blossom rice balls are so beautiful to look at (and eat!) that you’d be crazy not to make them for your next picnic or girls get-together!

You can buy the pre-salted cherry blossoms in Japan from your local grocery store from about March-May. And even earlier in the year you could make these with plum tree flowers (which bloom about 1-2 months earlier than cherry blossoms).

Watch the fun video below for tips!

What you need:

  • Rice (freshly made, still warm) – 2 cups
  • Cherry blossoms (salted)
  • Plastic wrap

How to make:

  1. Soak cherry blossoms in water for 5min. Pat dry on a towel.
  2. Place plastic wrap on your hand, and arrange cherry blossom on the plastic. On top of this place a scoop of warm rice.
  3. Twist into a ball and mould with your hands into shape.
